  Preparing Your Files

The three most things to remember in preparing a file for transfer and output are file format, image resolution, and fonts.

    File Format

File Format

Portable Document Format (.pdf)is the preferred file format for printing. PLEASE NOTE You must check settings when saving a file as a PDF to ensure you file will be of printable quality.

Proprietary or native file formats, that is file formats designed to work in a particular program such as Adobe Illustrator "filename.ai" or Corel "filename.cdr", require the program in which the file was created or a program equipped with the import filter for the file format in order to open and print the file. Check with us before sending a native file format to ensure we will be able to read your files.

Encapsulated Postscript Files (.eps) are recognized by most professional graphics programs. Information needed to produce the image from the digital file is embedded or "encapsulated" in the file. Colour model and other settings must be set before the file is saved for output.

Image Resolution

For large format printing a minimum resolution of 150 ppi (pixels/dots per inch) at 100% is required for optimum image reproduction.

Some programs such as Adobe PhotoShop will allow you to increase the number of pixels per inch of an image. However, it should be noted that an image interpolated by changing the pixels per inch will appear less sharp when viewed at the larger size. Applying a sharpening filter to a digital image before it is interpolated may improve the image quality at the larger size.

Fonts

Converting fonts to Outlines eliminates font issues for most printing applications. Save an unconverted copy of the artwork so changes can be made.

Embedding Fonts in a PDF includes font data as part of the printer description file. This allows the file to be output without converting the type to outlines. It does not allow changes to be made on a remote machine as only the information needed to print the file is embedded in the file. To make changes the font must be loaded into the system of the system on which changes are being made,

Sending Fonts with Your Artwork is the the least dependable method of supplying font information to the printer. Depending on the font used,True Type, Type One, Multible Master etc. conflicting names, numbering, or other conflicts may cause type to print incorectly. When sending fonts be sure you include screeen and printer files where necessary.
